विद्यापीठाची स्थापना 1 मे 1983 रोजी झाली. सुरुवातीला या विद्यापीठाचे नाव अमरावती विद्यापीठ असे होते. नंतर महाराष्टातील थोर संत व समाजसुधारक गाडगेबाबा यांचे नाव या विद्यापीठास देण्यात आले.
