It was the fourth university to be established by the British colonial authorities in the Indian subcontinent. The first three universities were established at Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta. The founder of the University of the Punjab was Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, a Hungarian scholar who had settled in British India.
