Court of Appeal Daily Court List 2024 Sri Lanka www.courtofappeal.lk Appeal Court :- The Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka, commonly known as the Appeal Court, is the second most senior court in the Sri Lankan legal system, with only the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka above it. Established in 1971, under the Court of Appeal Act No. 44 of 1971, the Appeal Court has jurisdiction to hear appeals from the High Court or any lower court; its own decisions may be additionally appealed to the Supreme Court. The Appeal Court is headed by the President of the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal consists of a President and a maximum of 20 other judges, who are appointed by the President of Sri Lanka, with the concurrence of the Parliamentary Council. The judges of the Court of Appeal are required to be qualified lawyers who have at least ten years of experience as a High Court judge or a practicing lawyer.

The Court of Appeal sits in three benches, each consisting of three judges. The benches hear appeals from the High Court and other lower courts. The Court of Appeal also has the power to issue writs of habeas corpus, mandamus, quo warranto, certiorari, prohibition, and quod ultra vires.

The decisions of the Court of Appeal are binding on all lower courts in Sri Lanka. The Court of Appeal is also the final court of appeal for certain types of cases, such as those involving election petitions and constitutional challenges. The Court of Appeal is located in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The Court’s website is www.courtofappeal.lk.
