UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION Sri Lanka
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the apex body of the University System in Sri Lanka. It was established on 22nd December 1978 under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978.
The UGC has the following functions:
- Planning and coordination of university education
- Allocation of funds to Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs)
- Maintenance of academic standards
- Regulation of the administration of HEIs
- Regulation of admission of students to HEIs
- Recognition of foreign universities
- Promotion of research and development
- Dissemination of knowledge
The UGC is headed by a Chairman, who is assisted by a Vice-Chairman and four other members. The members are appointed by the President of Sri Lanka.
The UGC has its headquarters in Colombo. It also has regional offices in Kandy, Jaffna, and Galle.
